Resort near Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

Given our setting here in the foothills of San Diego County, it’s not exactly surprising that guests of ours at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe have spellbinding Southern Californian beauty at their beck and call.

You’re not hurting for scenic options, that’s for sure, but certainly one of the all-out prettiest seasonal destinations is Carlsbad Ranch up the coast—and specifically the 50-plus acres of jaw-droppingly gorgeous gardens they maintain overlooking that big blue Pacific Ocean.

As we roll through October, now’s the time to start planning a springtime visit with us here at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe and get ready to soak up the 2018 bloom bonanza at the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch!

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

The stars of that bonanza are Carlsbad Ranch’s hillside spread of Tecolote® Giant Ranunculus, a much-admired variety of Ranunculusalso known as the Persian buttercup. The multicolored displays visitors enjoy from March through May every year are the legacy of many decades of careful cultivation that began in the early 1920s, when settler Luther Gage first planted buttercup seeds in the vicinity.

Today a partnership between the Ecke family (the landowner), Mellano & Company of San Luis Rey (the grower), and Armstrong Garden Centers, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch rank among the most popular destinations in the area, and their sumptuous, dazzling blooms truly help usher in springtime.

The timetable of the flower spectacle varies each year depending on weather conditions, of course, but you can usually expect to enjoy peak bloom between mid-March and mid-April. Take along sun protection and a jacket or sweater for comfortably wandering the fields.

If you’re inspired enough by the painted slope of the Flower Fields, you can purchase cut flowers as well as bulbs, potted plants, and other horticultural happiness in the Armstrong Garden Center Gift Shop on site.

On weekends vendors sell foods at Carlsbad Ranch, and the property also invites visitors to bring their own vittles and hold a picnic amid all the floral splendor.

You can purchase tickets at the Flower Fields beginning March 1st (the grounds are open through May 13), or reserve them in advance by ordering online right here.
