Lunar New Year at SeaWorld
2018 marks the Year of the Dog, and from China and Vietnam to Asian-American communities all across the United States festivals are underway to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
That includes a number of excellent versions right here in our sun-spangled neck of the woods, including the San Diego Tet (Vietnamese New Year) Festival in Mira Mesa Community Park (February 16 to 18) and, through February 25, the Lunar New Year celebrations over at SeaWorld San Diego. With accommodations at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, you’re but a hop, skip, and a jump from all the Year of the Dog carousing among the marine life!
Lunar New Year at SeaWorld San Diego
SeaWorld San Diego’s Lunar New Year—which you can enjoy for the price of admission to the oceanarium theme park—serves as a Pan-Asian festival, ringing in the Year of the Dog with live music, choreographed performances, and a bounty of wonderful food.
Among the onstage entertainment at the Mission Bay Theater will be the dazzling Chinese Acrobats of Hebei, who put on an impressive version of the traditional Lion Dance alongside high-thrills gymnastics, contortionist routines, martial arts, and unique plate-spinning, hat-juggling, pole-climbing, and chair-stacking routines.
The seasonal soiree also serves up a wide-ranging assortment of Asian culinary delights: from green tea to bao sandwiches, spring rolls, and ramen.
And given it’s the Year of the Dog dawning, SeaWorld San Diego’s Lunar New Year party also puts the spotlight on our four-legged friends at the almost unacceptably adorable Puppy Garden, a perfect photo op as well as an opportunity to learn about pet adoption at local animal shelters.
All in all, it’s a family-friendly gala sure to instill in you plenty of optimism about 2018’s Year of the Dog, and a fine chance to celebrate greater San Diego’s wonderfully rich Asian-American culture. Naturally by attending the Lunar New Year shindig you’ll also have the opportunity to take in the rest of SeaWorld’s attractions, from the aquariums and the live animal shows to the amusement rides (which, mind you, will by this summer include the park’s biggest, gnarliest roller coaster ever, the Electric Eel).
