The 2018 San Diego International Film Festival
Established in 2001, the San Diego International Film Festival showcases Hollywood mega-stars as well as ambitious up-and-coming filmmakers from the world over. Things kick off, as usual, at the Opening Night Film Premiere on Wednesday, October 10th, held at one of San Diego’s great architectural landmarks: the Balboa Theatre. This year’s Opening Night film hasn’t yet been announced, but it’s always a talked-about offering; previous screenings have included Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Hidden Figures, and 12 Years a Slave.
You can check out the full schedule for the 2018 San Diego International Film Festival right here. From animation shorts to drama and comedy features, there’s an awesome range of stylistic and thematic territory, and the festival truly earns its “international” tag given the globe-spanning geography represented by its screenings. You’ve got everything from Wild Nights With Emily (October 11th at 8 PM at the Regal Theater), starring Molly Shannon as Emily Dickinson, to Soufra (October 12th at 2:30 PM at ArcLight Cinemas), a documentary about refugee and social entrepreneur Mariam Shaar, to Indian Horse (October 14th at 6:30 PM at the Regal Theater), chronicling a First Nations boy’s experiences in the residential schools of 1970s-era Canada.
The festival features plenty of filmmaker and actor Q&As as well as sure-to-be fascinating discussions, including the Unstoppable Woman Panel on the 12th at 1 PM at Pendry San Diego.
And then there’s the glitzy Night of the Stars Tribute on October 11th at Pendry San Diego’s Grand Ballroom, which begins with a red-carpet soiree at 5:30 PM and follows up the awards ceremony with a swanky after-party. Past honorees at this festival staple have included Sir Patrick Stewart, Geena Davis, and Kumail Nanjiani.
